Every minute, an average of 20 people are abused in the United States
alone. This means that over 10 million women and men have to experience
this each year. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience violence
with an intimate partner at some point in their lives. Not only are
victims exposed to physical damage, but also experience an emotional
toll that may trail them for the rest of their lives.
Domestic violence is underrepresented in social media and people either
don't discuss it, or don't feel comfortable talking about it. Educating
yourself to understand what it is, even if you don't experience it, may
help someone a lot. Domestic violence affects from 3.3 million to 10
million children each year. Knowing the signs of someone being abused
can save their lives.
Victims will usually display more reserved behavior, agitation, anxiety
and will have a loss of self esteem. Further, unexplained bruises or
markings on their skin could be a sign that they are being abused. The
emotional damage that comes with being abused is tremendous, especially
in children, and can be translated into their older life in the form of
PTSD, anxiety, and depression. This is why it is imperative to educate
yourself on domestic violence, and be able to catch it in your peers and
friends before it is too late.
